Norwich Research Park

The Norwich Research Park (NRP) is a partnership between the University of East Anglia, the John Innes Centre, the Institute of Food Research, the Genome Analysis Centre, the Sainsbury Laboratory and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. The NRP has over 30 companies located either in the Norwich Bio-Incubator or in one or other of the member organisations.

The NRP has an excellent international reputation for its research particularly in the areas of health, food, plant and microbial sciences, environmental sciences, computer and information technologies and chemistry and materials.  The main strength of the NRP is the concentration of world-leading scientists coupled with the capability for multidiscliplinary research.  We continue to build on this by attracting new partners to the Park to collaborate in our research and to develop our vision for the site.

The NRP is set in over 160 hectares of parkland on the outskirts of East Anglia's historic market city with 50 ha earmarked by South Norfolk Council for further development .  2,700 research scientists are based in the Park which spends over £100 million on research p.a.  In total, there are over 100,000m2 of laboratory space, with over 6,000m2 of conventional and containment glasshouses and nearly 200m2 of controlled environment suites.

History of the NRP

Science research began in a major way in Norwich in the 1960s, with the founding of the University of East Anglia, the relocation of the former John Innes Institute to Norwich and the building of the Institute of Food Research. The John Innes Centre was formed after the relocation of scientists from the former Plant Breeding Institute in Cambridge and researchers from the Nitrogen Fixation Unit at the Universitof Sussex. The Sainsbury Laboratory was built on the John Innes Centre site in 1988 and most recently in 2001, the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital was opened.  The hospital has teaching status through its links with the UEA Medical School. The Norwich Research Park was established as a partnership between the member organisations in the mid 90s.

Recent additions to the NRP include the Genome Analysis Centre, a major new Biomedical Research Centre and a new Clinical Research Trials Unit, Norwich Energy Laboratories, Low Carbon Innovation Centre

Partners and Developers

As well as the major NRP partners, the site is home to the Norwich Bio-Incubator along with Plant Bioscience Ltd (PBL), a technology transfer and licensing company owned by the John Innes Centre, the Sainsbury Laboratory and BBSRC.   Our wider stakeholder partners include the County (Norfolk), District (South Norfolk) and City (Norwich) Councils and the East of England Development Agency. Building development projects have also been funded on site by the John Innes Foundation, DTI, the Wellcome Trust and BBSRC.
